Notes from Ms. Sherman:

Thank you SOOOOOOO very much to those of you that joined us for our 9th annual Voyager night. We all love to get together and see families before we go for our winter break. Thank you also to all the brave students that put themselves out there to perform on stage and to our sound and light crew, Baylin and Tyler. The food was great, the company was merry, and the night was bright. THANKS AGAIN!

The Week in Mr. Merrill’s Room (⅚ Humanities):
Highlights
Book Talks: Students presented their book talk using the organizer they completed as a guide.
Voyager Play Challenge: We kicked off our Voyager Play Challenge this week. Students are working in combined challenge teams to write a one act script to perform during our play unit in January.
World Almanac - We had a lot of fun searching a world almanac for largest, smallest, oldest, highest and lowest in a variety of categories. We found the most populated country, largest country, oldest country, lowest life expectancy etc.
5 Themes of Geography SlideShow: Students completed and shared (via musical chairs) a Google SlideShow on their selected country.



The Week in Ms. O’s Room (⅚ Math & Science):

Math 5:

It was the week of code, so we spent two days doing coded unplugged.  Monday, students wrote a code for a design on a four by four grid.  They then shared this code with a partner who then tried to read the code and recreate the design.  Afterwards we wrote code for a bunny on the Google Doodle of the day, so that the bunny could find and eat carrots.  I happened upon it at the end of class, and of course, kids were so psyched about it!  Today, we did another unplugged coding activity, where 5th graders read code for a treasure hunt written by 6th graders.  6th graders hid five colored dots in the hallways around school and then wrote code to be followed in the hunt.  We had a few unclear coding directives, but for the most part, students
enjoyed reading code to locate their colored dots.

We began Unit 3 this week, a unit on decimals.  We discussed place value, when looking at the question, are all 3’s created equal? (in the number 33,333.33).  We played around with two problem strings, one called Give and Take and the other called Ten times more, both to look at the the effect operations have on decimals.


Math 6:  

We are driving toward the division algorithm for fractions and finding great generalizations along the way.  Ideas we have been uncovering:  That when you divide by a number, say 3,  it is the same as taking a fraction of that number, ⅓ of a number.  Finding ⅓ of a number is multiplying ⅓ x that number, so we can then see that a reciprocal operation can get us to the same endpoint, when we use the reciprocal of that number.  Hard to explain...let’s see if this example helps:

45 ÷ 3 is the same at ⅓ of 45.  Since the word ‘of’ in this case means multiply, then we flip the operation from division to multiplication and flip 3/1 to become ⅓ .  Now you can see that dividing by a number is the same as multiplying by the reciprocal.  We can then apply that here:

¾  ÷ ½ we know will be 1 ½ when we model this. We can also see that we can do 3 ÷ 1 (divide numerators) and 4 ÷ 2 (divide denominators) and get 3/2.  Or we can take ¾ x 2/1 = 6/4 or 1 ½ .

It was the week of CODE, so students had several opportunities to write code.  Today, students wrote code for a treasure hunt for 5th grade.    
⅚ Science:

We have had such fun with magnets last week and electricity this week.  We began last week looking at properties of magnets and making visible some of the things that seem invisible about magnets.  See the photos below of fun demonstrations and activities we did.  We also began investigations on electricity this week and are moving toward the connection between magnetism and electricity.

The Week from Ms. Q’s Room (⅞ Math & Science):

CMP8
This week we practiced adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying numbers in scientific notation.  Each of these operations have distinct rules that at times combine the Commutative Property and exponent rules.  We rounded out the week with Growing, Growing, Growing Review stations.  On Friday we began our assessment.  

CMP7
This week was a mishmash of mathematical models.  We looked at solving inequalities, practiced multiplying and dividing integers and began balancing algebraic equations.  Students also had an Accentuate the Negative review with stations around the room.  We began our assessment on Friday.

Science
How are traits inherited? We took a closer look at genetics and dominant and recessive traits by breeding dragons. Through a series of allele selections students were able to create babies with interesting differences. Some dragons were fire breathers, some had horns and some had red wings and blue bodies.  We then took parent dragons with different traits and created Punnett squares.
In this Punnett Square the TT genotype represents the mother with a red tail.  The father has a yellow tail which has a recessive tt.  When the boxes are filled in you can see the possible outcomes of the children. Half will have red tails and half will have yellow tails.  
We ended the week starting our research of types of genetic mutations.  Next week we will begin looking at genetic disorders.


This week in Mr. Roof’s ELA and Social Studies classes

ELA:  This week, we worked on independent reading log 13. Students are making impressive literature decisions. It is exciting to see the growth each week. In an attempt to bring some excitement to sharing about our books, students entered a Library of Congress contest that involved writing a letter to an author about a book that has changed them or their point of view of the world. We worked on letter writing for the week, making sure we supported our ideas with evidence. The letters were mailed on Friday with the possibility of students winning $200 as a runner up, or $1000 as a finalist. Very cool!  

Social Studies: We were all over the place this week!  On Monday, we had our usual current events study with Carl Azuz from CNN 10. On Tuesday and Wednesday, students continued work on the GEO B, which were are slowly arriving at a Voyager champion that will represent us in a schoolwide competition. On Thursday, we read an article about the December 7th, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, and wrote prompt responses.

Voyager's Annual Family Night and Variety Show - December 6th, 6:30 - 8:15pm!!
It's that time of year again for Voyager Family Night!  We will have snacks first in the Dining Room, then go to the auditorium for some fun and open-mike performances.

Throughout the evening raffle prizes are awarded as a fun way to celebrate the night.

We do ask that families to please donate a raffle prize or bring a small snack to share, based on the core class your child is in.  Such prizes in the past have been movie tickets, gift cards or any sort of small treat.

Hi, my name is Emma and I'm in 4th grade at WCS.  My family and I bring food to local homeless people every week and I've noticed that many of them do not have proper winter attire.   I am planning to make "Homeless Care Packages" and I am hoping you will donate some items. Some ideas are: hand warmers, bottles of water, snack mix, gloves, socks, hats, etc. My sisters and I will be distributing these care packages in Burlington, South Burlington and Williston to homeless people this winter. The white collection bin will be located in the front office at Williston Central School. Thanks so much for considering!!

The Week in Mr. Merrill’s Room (⅚ Humanities):
Highlights:
First Trimester Reflection - Students reflected on Humanities work from the first trimester and added pictures of the work and the reflections to their PLP sites.
5 Themes of Geography - We completed our research for our Country Google Slideshows. This work will form the basis for our upcoming International Day celebration.
Book Fair - We visited the book fair and students enjoyed some extra reading time with their new books!

FYI - 5th grade spelling and vocabulary program scores are posted on Google Classroom (these are the only programs that have percentage scores).

The Week from Ms. Q’s Room (⅞ Math & Science):

CMP8
Flies, Snakes and Mold populations were growing exponentially in the 8th grade math class this week. Actually, if you looked under my sink you might be surprised.  We explored exponential functions that doubled and tripled. We looked at what the y-intercept represents in the context of our functions....usually the number of flies, snakes and patch of mold where you begin your investigation. We investigated fractional exponents and practiced mathematical operations with scientific notation.

CMP7
What is absolute value and is it absolutely important to our study of positive and negative numbers? Absolutely! We solved absolute value problems and saw how knowing the absolute value can absolutely help you in seeing the relationship between positive and negative numbers. We then went onto our “Love Triangle” of multiplying and dividing positive integers. When you love (+) to hate (-), you hate (-) positive integer multiplied by a negative integer = a negative integer. Absolutely lovely.

Science

We began the week with looking at all sorts of plants and animal cells.  We focused on the role of cells and did a brief overview of the organelles that cells have. We then moved onto mitosis and meiosis which are two forms of cell division.  All of this is leading us to the study of genetics and how traits are passed from generation to generation.  We ended the week with a survey of traits that we could discover in our class such as tongue rolling and dimples.  We graphed our results, analyzed our data and created claim/evidence statements.

  • Played 5 Themes of Geography Team Jeopardy
  • Students selected and started to research a country for our Google Slides project.
  • Prepared for the National Geographic Bee using Kahoot games and Geo Bee quizzes.
  • Completed final self assessment of our Reading Response Notebooks.
  • Watched ‘He Named Me Malala’ as a follow up to the read aloud of the book.

The Week in Ms. O’s Room (⅚ Math & Science):

Math 5:  I owe you a deep and detailed explanation of the week, but I am pooped!  The last 12 weeks have been busy in our 5th grade math class and I’m seeing a lot of growth!  But...we could all use a break. Thank goodness we are about to have one!

Thanks to you all for helping with homework at home.  I know it can be stressful.  Please always know that it’s better to limit the frustrations and stress of homework.  Just send those kiddos in with their best effort and this will be enough!  

Highlights from this week include:
  • Two different days of graphing science data.  This is a valuable skill for math, but essential for science, because it helps us say something important about data.  We have collected and graphed two sets of data: barometer data for daily ‘heights” of water and our straw markers AND data from our “Heating the Earth” investigation, where students looked at how the sun drives the weather by heating air in the atmosphere.  I have attached a few photos of the graphs and a list of observations students made about the graphed data.  
  • Ah ha moments about ratio tables and their value to addition and subtraction of fraction problems.  Students see that ratio tables allow us to find equivalent fractions for given fractions and then find common denominators for those given fractions.

Highlights from the week include:
  • We took a quiz on fraction addition and subtraction.  Still some persistent misconceptions are present.  Practice some at home!
  • A discovery about fraction of problems...that these kinds of problems are really fraction multiplication problems and that fractions have a much easier strategy for solving.  That is, multiplying numerators and denominators.
  • We also discovered that improper fractions can be clunky to multiply.  But that when we use an area model, the process for solving is much easier.

⅚ Science:
It was graphing galore week!  We collected lots of mathematical data this week and used both math and science time to represent the story of our data sets in graphical form.  Highlights from the week include:
  • Reading more about air and weather
  • Watching a few videos on air masses and fronts
  • Recording data from our homemade barometers and graphing this data
  • Graphing data about the uneven distribution of hot and cold air on Earth and how this drives our weather systems
Coming soon...magnets, electricity and electromagnets!  Should be a great unit.  Our resident engineer, Dan, will provide expertise, as an electrical engineer, of scientific discoveries and technologies that changed our world!  



The Week in Mr. Roof’s Room (⅞ Humanities):

ELA: Greetings All, and Happy Thanksgiving!  This week, we worked to complete a second written draft of our Turning Point narratives. Students have been busy peer editing and revising their writing. We are hoping to make these narratives examples of super strong writing. The assessed draft is now due on Dec 1, so two weeks left! We also continued practice with subject/verb agreement, making sure that all of our subjects and verbs agree in tense (past, present, or future) and number (singular or plural).  Students are now on reading log 11 to accompany their independent reading. It is quite amazing the amount of literature that our students read so far this year. They are an impressive bunch. Ask them about their favorite book so far.
Social Studies:  In preparation for the National Geographic School Bee 2018, we practiced geography skills using an online location site, and Kahoots, which is a class quiz in a competition format. This will help us to determine a Voyager Geography master, who will go on to compete against other WCS teams. In addition as usual, we worked on summary and current events with CNN 10.

The Week from Ms. Q’s Room (⅞ Math & Science):

CMP8
We began this week with looking back at our “Thinking with Mathematical Models”. In our summative assessment many students performed well on some learning targets but then  missed some important parts of another.  As a class we honed in on two learning targets; multi-steps equations and creating equations for linear models.  We discussed strategies and practiced and then the retake was given.

In the middle of the week students began grappling with exponential graphs, tables and equations.  We looked at an amoeba dividing every 30 minutes and graphed how many amoeba we would have after 8 hours. We found our growth factor, y-intercept, and created an equation that looks like: y= a(b)x The “a” is the initial value or y-intercept, the “b” is the growth factor, the “x” is the independent variable (time) and the “y” is the total amount of amoeba.  We ended the week with some practice on exponents and scientific notation and a few math card games.

CMP7
We were in to chips this week and I am not talking about sour cream and onion!  When working with positive and negative integers we utilize black and red chips as positive and negative integers.  We learned different strategies for adding and subtracting integers.

We finished the week with pulling out our “Shapes and Designs” Unit Tests and redoing some of our errors.  The two areas that we worked on was finding the sum of the internal and external angle of a polygon and construction of various geometric figures.  We conferred, discussed and practiced a variety of questions and ended with a brief retake.

On Friday we practiced our chip skill and had the chance to play a few math card games.

Science 7th/8th
The last two weeks we have been feverishly finishing our chemistry unit.  Last week we looked at pH and used cabbage juice as an indicator to find out how acidic or basic some common liquids are.  We learned what it means to be acidic or basic, and how acids and bases react with each other.  As we began this week, we explored acid rain, its causes and how it can impact the ecosystem.  We read some information of how Vermont is handling this issue.

At the end of the week we completed our Chemistry Unit with a summative assessment.  Students had access to their journals, Periodic Tables and class records.  They worked hard to show what they know.  When we return from our break we will be moving on!
