After School Club:  CHANGE IN DAYS OFFERED
Voyager House offers an after-school program to all 5-8 grade Voyager students who would like a smaller, quieter setting for work completion.  We accept any student who is motivated to be there and willing to work independently and who is open to support. We may also recommend this opportunity to students who are in need of work completion or who consistently fail to complete assigned work.  It has been a great program for students and we are happy to have the staffing and funding to offer it again this year. Ms. Kim and Ms. Allison, our two house paras, will be the contact adults for this group.
- Every Tuesday (2:00-3:00) and Thursday (3:00-4:40) right after dismissal.
- Occasionally cancelled due to staffing.  We will let you know as far in advance as we know!

Voyager House Learning Tools
for teachers, students, and parents

Google Site - an important site for regular communication coming from Voyager.  This site will be modified weekly and should be bookmarked
on your desktop or laptop.  This site contains a link to weekly academic summaries as well as important upcoming events.
https://sites.google.com/cvsdvt.org/voyagerhouse/home

Google Classroom - an online planner platform where students can check on daily assignments.  This is in lieu of a paper planner. Just ask
your child to log in using his/her email.  It is important to know that this is not an assessment database.  We do not check completion of
the assignment on this platform.  However, we do ask that YOUR CHILD press the button MARK AS DONE when an assignment is completed.
This will make it easy for you and your child to discuss completion of work.

Google Mail - an email system used by Williston Central School.  All students have an email account and students use it regularly to
communicate with peers around collaborative work and project-based learning.  This is a great way for teachers to communicate with students
and a great way for students to get reminders about assignments from Google Classroom.

Jumprope - an online platform for assessment of the targets.  Students can view weekly or biweekly his/her achievement on the targets by
logging in using his/her email and a password. This password was emailed to each student in a letter last week. *Habits of Learning, like
homework completion and collaborative learning skills will be posted on a biweekly schedule. This is where you CAN SEE whether your child
is in good standing on daily assignments. https://nyc.jumpro.pe/login/

Protean - an online Personalized Learning Plan (PLP) platform used primarily at this point by 7th and 8th graders. ⅚ students may post
executive function skills reflections, personal interest projects, and other measures of growth and reflection after 1st trimester.
https://app.protean.me/index.html

IXL - a program that supports students on math and language arts skills.
https://www.ixl.com/signin

Moby Max - a math program used by ⅚ math students to build computational fluency and fill gaps in understanding on major concepts.
Students have a username and password for this program.

Typing Club - a program used by the ⅚ humanities students to build typing skills.

ACADEMIC UPDATES
Ms.Q
CMP8
This week 8th graders fine-tuned their understanding of creating a line of best fit.  We explored the 1st Century architect, engineer and author,
Marcus Vitruvius Pollio and his conjecture that the human height was directly related to a person’s arm span.

We collected our class data, created a scatterplot, created a line of best fit and created a linear equation from that line.  We then compared
our linear model with the actual model to find out how far off we were mathematically. We found that Vitruvius was a pretty smart scholar!

At the end of the week, we went through a practice test, worked on more complicated algebraic equations with fractions and worked on a fun
Jo Boaler math puzzle.

CMP7
The 7th graders as a whole class successfully came to an understanding of how to find the internal sum of regular and irregular polygons.  They
learned the naming protocol of rotational angles and how to use benchmark angles to estimate the measure of angles. We worked on solving some
of our first algebraic expressions and explored how to keep things balanced. We ended the week with a math problem from Jo Boaler!

Science 7th/8th
This week was all about testing and redesigning our mousetrap cars.  Lots of great ideas, momentous mistakes, frustrating mishaps and exciting
successes! Next week we will have our competition and then begin our lab report write-up.  Mr. Roof, Ms. Sherman, Ms. Allison and I will be
conducting writing workshops to help fine-tune our science writing.

Mr. Roof
This week, we commenced our study of WWI. We are looking at the causes of the war, through the acronym MAIN: Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism,
and Nationalism. We investigated the building of tension between countries that led to the forming of secret alliances and eventually, full scale war.
Student completed mini investigations and research within their table groups to complete a few tasks, so this was a good week to work on and
discuss collaboration skills. In addition, we worked on grammar skills through IXL, figurative language through the reading log, and current events
through CNN 10. For figurative language, we looked at idioms last week. Next week, we switch to techniques, which includes dialogue, length of
sentences, using dialect/slang, and other specific writing choices that authors use. These decisions comprise what is known as Writer's craft. Fun
Fact Questions:  Did you know that Italy and Japan were both on the side of the Allies during WWI, but switched to the Axis powers for WWII? Do
you know the meaning of the idiom "straight from the horse's mouth?"

Ms. O’Brien Classes
Math 5:  This week students pushed on their understanding of place value with decimals by learning how to compare decimals and round.  With visual models and other strategies, students are showing deep understanding of place value, an understanding important when we get to operating with decimals.  We began using the 6th grade Decimal Ops book to get at these ideas and others like calculating with decimals. There is something in it for everyone. Decimals Ops has challenging problems that encourage deep thinking, and so homework may feel like it just got a little harder.  I have been supporting students in core and pushing on algebraic thinking and expression writing with decimals in real world contexts. The book is not one students can write in so you may see a red book coming home. All homework should be done in each student’s learning log.

We are moving towards addition and subtraction of decimals and then completion of the unit after this skill is mastered.

Math 6:  6th Grade students are working toward completion of the unit Comparing Bits and Pieces. This unit on rational numbers has introduced a broad range of skills, from ratios and unit rates, to renaming fractions as decimals and finding percents of a number.  This foundational math is essential for units that will come up later in the year, related to decimal operations, fraction operations, and proportional reasoning. I’m hoping that we have made some progress.  I will also make available problems from the first part of the unit, on ratio reasoning in problem solving. Students will have access to these problems in order to change the target score on Jumprope.

Science ⅚:  Students have learned about how plants ensure their survival!  A short project based assessment on seeds has been the focus this week, as students have organized their seed collections and displayed them in an accordian portfolio.  Students are then doing an on-demand writing task to explain how plants ensure survival through seed structure. That on-demand writing task is due on Tuesday.

Mr. Merrill

Reading Cafe:  We wrapped up our mystery and spook book on Monday. We identified what it was that made the book creepy or scary. We often do some
work in our Reading Response Notebooks after we read. Students keep an ongoing book list to capture all of the books they read during the school year. They
also write “me as a reader” reflections about the things they notice about the book and themselves as readers. The strategy section is a place to document reading
strategies that they learn with each new book. This time we focused on setting. Students also keep track of tier 2 words. These are robust vocabulary words that
students come across and add to their list of new words. Students create word maps with these words and use them in other activities throughout the school year.
Students should have an independent reading book ready to go for next week’s reading cafe.

Candidate Forum LEAF Essay:  We revised and edited our LEAF essays this week. Before we started the revision process, we reviewed transition words, looking at
other essays and finding the transition words. We discussed how writers use transition words to organize their writing and connect ideas. Before we did our editing,
we reviewed multiple ways we use commas in our writing. Students had to look at a piece of writing and identify which rule was applied when using a comma.
Students self and peer edited their LEAF with an eye on capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.

Three Branches of Government: We are wrapping up this unit with a role play (legislative branch), mock trial (supreme court), and roles of the presidency activity
(executive branch). Students will reflect on each activity and their roles in their writer’s notebook.

A final assessment before the thanksgiving break will focus on the relationship between the 3 branches of government.
